25th Grand Slam title for Hingis

Martina Hingis declared herself amazed after capturing her 25th career Grand Slam crown, partnering with Taiwan's Chan Yung-Jan to win the US Open women's doubles title.

The Swiss star, who turns 37 later this month, won her 13th Grand Slam women's doubles title as she and Chan beat Czechs Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-2.

Hingis has 13 major doubles titles, along with five in singles and seven in mixed doubles. She and partner Jamie Murray won the mixed title a day before.

The member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame was 16 when she won the 1997 U.S. Open singles title by beating Venus Williams. She gave up singles long ago but returned to doubles after coming out of her second retirement and remains one of the tops in the world. She will move up to No. 2 in the WTA doubles rankings. "What I have done in my career earlier, I'm very proud of that," Hingis said. "I was very young. It's been 20 years, been on and off. But I think today is even more — it's different, it's sweeter, because it's also the way how we won, the fashion.

"We just played impeccable, pretty much, I mean, from the start to the end."

This was the seventh title of the season for Hingis and Chan. It was the 28-year-old Chan's first in a Grand Slam tournament, coming with a player she said she watched when she was young.

Hingis won the 1997 US and Australian Open and Wimbledon singles titles plus the 1998 and 1999 Australian Open singles crowns.

Asked if she might consider a return to singles, Hingis gave a polite but firm rejection to the idea, saying she relies upon partners too much.

The champions, who shared a $675,000 top prize, made only two unforced errors in the match while the Czech duo made 18.

A day before this Women’s doubles final, Hingis and Britain's Jamie Murray fought off a match point to defeat Hao-Ching Chan and Michael Venus 6-1 4-6 7-6(10-8) to claim the U.S. Open mixed doubles title.

The top-seeded partnership, which won their first tournament together at Wimbledon in July, pushed their team record to an unblemished 10-0 with the win over the number three seed.
